Oil is running out and, if the Western world continues with its current policies, the next decades will likely be marked by war, economic collapse, and environmental catastrophe. There are alternatives. A 'Powerdown' strategy, for example, would aim to reduce per-capita resource usage, develop alternative energy sources, distribute resources more equitably, and reduce the human population over time.

- Powerdown is an important and courageous book. Review by Rob Hopkins, co-founder of the Transition Movement - from Permaculture magazine
-
Richard Heinberg is the author of the indispensible The Party's Over, which is the definitive book on Peak Oil. Powerdown builds on the findings of it's predecessor, and looks more at what we can do about it. Powerdown is an important and courageous book. Heinberg asks some very uncomfortable questions that really need to be asked. I would have liked a clearer idea of how we practically powerdown, to give us the tools to sit down with neighbours and say "right, what do we do about this...". It fails to do that, and for me, despite its many strengths, is ultimately it weakness. (Posted on 08/07/2010)Review
