Here, in the companion to his novel, Ross Jackson gives us the evidence to show that his claims are not only true, but also increasingly difficult to dismiss. Detailed authentication backs up Jackson's arguments and he explains the reasons, often sound, logical reasons why the true story was suppressed and why many events were misinterpreted by historians. The story in Shaker of the Spear may well be as close as we are ever likely to get to the truth of what really happened in Francis Bacon's life. Anyone in doubt of this claim should delve into The Companion to find a compelling case for a revision of history.

- Fascinating novel! Review by David Lawton
-
Fascinating novel! This is a 'docu-novel' and it is, as such, a fascinating read. It is a novel about the world's greatest literary genius written by someone with no discernable literary talent. The writing here is utterly prosaic, its banality beggars belief, every character speaks in the author's unremarkable voice. In short - as a novel - it is exasperatingly bad. So why four stars? Firstly - and thank God - the author is NOT a novelist, and presenting his material in that form is only somewhat self-defeating. I cannot help but think that a fictionalized (auto)biography would have been the author's better option. Secondly, the content is truly wonderful and would make a fabulous serious film. We learn that not only was Francis Bacon the author of Shakespeare, he was also the reincarnation of Plato and Plotinus. He was mystic, poet, scientist, intellectual, son of Elizabeth I and, hence, the philosopher-king in waiting. The book abounds in interest - to read it was a joy, though it was not a joy to read. The companion book - basically footnotes to the novel - is an essential purchase for those interested in the authorship debate. Buy it! A veritable Tour de Force - A must read! Bravo! What a great effort this is! Shaker of the Speare will guide you through appr. 70 years of behind-the-scenes history, as you are watching it unfold through the eyes of royalty, peers and poets. Ross Jackson has mastered the enormous task of creating vibrant life from fragments of secret knowledge. The story is thoroughly credible - you cannot help but agree this is they the way it might have happened. And the author makes sense of the great WHY in the Shakespeare authorship question. I recommend this book from the depth of my heart. I know it might provoke several of its readers, and I fear it could be actively ignored or even ridiculed because of the potential devastating effect it has on the forced, streamlined, scholarly consensus, as regards anything Shakespearean. Do yourself a favour and read Shaker of the Speare! And get the companion volume as well. (Posted on 01/07/2010)Review
