I think Lloyd Kahn’s classic book Shelter was the first book that really turned me on to architecture. The amazing diversity of human achievement in building is so culturally linked to our landscape and natural resources and in Shelter the simp-licity of this human need was beautifully portrayed. Lloyd followed this up with the inspiring book Home Work and now we have Builders of the Pacific Coast.Review
As a man who builds with timber and shingles, this book is packed with inspirational ideas. It focuses as the title suggests on carpenters of the Pacific coast, north of San Francisco up to Vancouver island. This area of trees and coastal waters inspires creative free form building and the use of cedar shakes and round poles on the beach makes the perfect local vernacular.
Pick up this book, take a day out in your life, and find a quiet beach or a peaceful woodland. Open the pages and let your imagination go. We can build the dream homes of our future out of local natural resources; this book takes you to a place where many already have.
