Agroforestry lies close to the original heart of permaculture. It means growing a mix of field crops and trees in the same place. The field crops can be grass, as in a traditional orchard, or, as in the cover illustration of this DVD, cereals, or indeed vegetables and soft fruit. Mixing crops like this brings us one step closer to the diversity of a natural ecosystem. Beautifully filmed, fast-moving and not without a sense of humour, it’s aim is clearly to get more farmers involved in agroforestry. It’s full of examples of ordinary farmers who have adopted the method on their own farms because it works for them.Review
Sceptics might say that it may work in France but would it work here under British conditions? Granted there are some climatic differences which might mean that methods need to be modified over here. But I suspect the biggest difference is a cultural one, connected with British conservatism with a small ‘c’. I think any farmer would be unwise to dismiss agroforestry out of hand before at least watching this film.
