DVD GUIDE
DVDs come from different regions and use different TV standards which mean not everyone may be able to play them. Hopefully these notes will help you make the right choice.
Standards
PAL & NTSC are two very different encoding methods for TV signals. NTSC is the US standard and locks to their electricity supply which is at 60 cycles per second. PAL is the UK standard and locks to our electricity supply which is at 50 cycles per second.
DVD Regions
DVDs have a region encoded onto them so that commercial products can't be pirated by other parts of the world. In theory they will only play in the region encoded. Region 0 has no coding and can be played anywhere in the world, subject to it being the correct standard. Region 1 is encoded for the USA and Canada and will be in NTSC. Region 2 is encoded for the UK, Europe, Egypt, Arabia, Japan & S Africa and will be in PAL Except for Japanese DVDs which may be in NTSC. Region 3 is for Korea, Thailand & Borneo. Region 4 is for Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean & S. America. Region 5 is for India, Africa, Russia & former USSR countries. Region 6 is China. 7 is unused, 8 airlines & cruise ships, 9 can be used as region free.
Compatibility
If you live in the correct region and use the same TV standard there will be no problem. If you live in another region and/or use a different TV standard you will need to check the compatibility of your equipment. For instance if you live in the UK and want to play a region 1, NTSC disc you will need a multiregion DVD player with NTSC to PAL decoding or a multiregion player and a TV which accepts NTSC signals. Some computers can play all types of DVD, but others either don't or require software switching from one region/standard to another. In any case please check your systems capability before purchasing.
