Save Fuel, Money & Emissions
Well I spotted this first product in the motoring section of the Sunday Times. Normally I would probably dismiss any claim of reduced emissions, hefty fuel savings and smoother driving performance from an add-on gadget that costs not much more than a tank of petrol, as just another time and money wasting gimmick. But the motoring sections reviewers arent given to endorsing suspect devices and they were full of praise for Ecoteks CB-26P fuel saver, so I decided to find out more about it.
A visit to Ecoteks website was very rewarding. I found that the Sunday Times wasnt alone in its praise for this cunning device, many other reviewers were just as impressed. In the last couple of years it has been tried out on a wide range of vehicles, from the old bangers most of us drive, to high performance sports cars and all with very favourable results.
So what does it do and how does it do it? Well, it significantly reduces exhaust emissions. Major improvements in CO and CO2 emissions have been reported by the DTI and a host of MOT test stations. It saves fuel tests have resulted in savings as high as 20%, though up to 15% is probably a safer expectation. It also improves the performance of the engine, resulting in better throttle response, mid-range engine flexibility and smoother running. All this is achieved by simply fitting this swirl technology valve to a vacuum hose con-nected to the inlet manifold, tuning it up and letting it get on with it. It works by adding small amounts of agitated air into the manifold, which results in better suspension of fuel molecules and thus better combustion, producing a more efficient, cleaner burn.
I am trying one on my L reg. Rover 820. It is too early to report on fuel savings but I can tell you about the fitting process and set up procedure. It took around ten minutes to fit. Having located the vacuum hose from the manifold to the brake servo, I simply cut it close to the manifold, slipped on size 000 Jubilee clips to each end, inserted the CB-26P and tightened up the clips. The only hard bit was I had to dip the ends of the hoses in hot water for a few seconds to soften them before they would stretch over the fittings on the unit. Next the engine was allowed to warm to operating temperature, and then I tuned the unit to my car by turning the knurled end anti-clockwise until it started making a rasping sound, and then returned it 90º and locked it off.
Not at all scary, but if you dont feel confident, expect a garage to charge up to £20 to do this for you.
A quick trial produced immediate results, the car definitely pulls better at low revs and has lost its flat spots going up through the gears, which proves something good must be happening. The unit did make a slight noise at times but this was cured by fitting a PiperX Filter. Facing the unit away from the passenger compartment would have had a similar result, but wasnt an easy option in my engine bay.
As many of us are likely to be reliant on our petrol engined cars for some years to come, I recommend the CB-26P as a sound way of reducing emissions, fuel usage and costs.
Safe To Drink?
Some months ago, a reader phoned up and asked me if I knew how to purify rainwater to make it safe to drink. We discussed boiling, distillation, sand filters and adapting pond equipment, but I knew there had to be a better way. There is: the GS2 Gravity Water Filter (right). This is a freestanding stainless steel unit, consisting of an upper and a lower container. Water placed in the upper container percolates to the lower one via two purifying filter cartridges. The result is clean water stripped of bacteria, parasites, heavy metals, chemicals, organic and other matter. Healthy minerals such as calcium and magnesium are, however, retained. If you want to drink rain, stream or well water and if we ever have a terrorist attack on our reservoirs, we may all need to then this unit is just the job. Personally I will find this a great addition to my tipi as it will allow local sourcing. It would of course be just as useful at home to strip the simply disgusting, and quite possibly carcinogenic chlorine from the tap water. Expect filters (about £25 each) to last at least a year or around 4,000 litres, 880 gallons when using mains water.
Vortexes, Implosion & Health
Researching this piece has stretched my scientific understanding to the limit. It has taken me into the world of quantum physics and beyond into the ether. I cant relay all this information, so if you want to find out about implosion theory for yourself, read some of the books based on Viktor Schaubergers work (Shauberger books), or enter the word implosion into any web search engine.
The Living Water Vortex Jug has to be the most intriguing product I have ever tried. A solid silver, leaf shaped paddle in the lid of the jug, stirs two litres of water anti-clockwise for about four minutes, producing a powerful vortex which brings the dead chemically polluted water we get out of the tap back to life. Hard to believe I know, but of the dozen people I blind tested eleven greatly preferred the taste of the spun water, and the other had a cold. I have had the jug at home for several months now, and water consumption by my family has soared from the odd glass to around four litres a day. This probably indicates that, as the makers claim, the body needs water which is conditioned in this way. Personally, I like to further condition it by standing my fridge jug on a Vortexes, Implosion & Health
