Having been so impressed with the build quality and performance of the Scheppach Lonus 3 garden shredder which I reviewed last issue, I was delighted to be able to try one of their other products the Scheppach Ox t500 log splitter. For many years I lived in a house heated entirely by wood. This was mainly acquired as whole trees and required considerable processing before it could be burnt, so I know a bit about splitting wood. It is a back breaking, frustrating labour in which you burn nearly as many calories as you get back when you burn it.
My first impression of the Ox t500 is that it is a very substantial piece of kit yet still quite compact. Not having a suitable assortment of logs to test it personally, I asked Darren of Out of the Woods to put it through its paces. Result, well just amazing, it cleanly split everything that was put into it. This ranged from sub-stantial Beech logs to chunks of seasoned oak with twisted complex grain that no one in their right minds would try to split manually. Fifteen minutes later he bought the log splitter from me, its that good! So if you have a lot of logs to split this is probably the machine for you.
