Save Water Bath With A Friend
With current water reserves at an all time low over much of Britain, this popular 60s slogan could merit revival. However without going quite that far I have been helping reuse my friends’ bath water.
Earlier in the year as many water companies started introducing hose pipe bans and applying for emergency measures to limit water use and like thousands of others I rushed out and bought extra rainwater butts to harvest whatever rain might fall.
My friends round the corner had another idea and replumbed their bath and shower downpipe to a water butt which was then connected to a leaky hose system. I was admiring this, when I remembered we had featured a greywater diverter valve in PM38 which would be just the thing to make this idea fully functional.
I contacted suppliers only to learn that due to its makers’ retirement this unique piece of kit was no longer available. Happily, with the volume of renewed interest this product is now being made again and I was able to get one to try out on my friends’ house.
Basically, the Water Two Greywater Diverter Valve is a pull string operated valve which allows you to choose whether your greywater goes down the drain or out via a standard hose pipe. It comes with push fit adaptors for a range of common plastic pipe sizes, and can be fitted at almost any angle. We were very constrained as to how it could be fitted, even so we had it all working in under an hour. If you want to reuse your greywater, I can’t recommend this product too highly.
Despite the dry start to the year my garden has been growing well and I have been putting a Joseph Bentley Traditional Pruning Set to good use. This consists of a pair of carbon steel secateurs, snips and a leather holster. I have been using the secateurs daily for some months and have found them ideal for light general purpose pruning. The clip on holster means you always have them with you and the snips have been just the job for keeping my grapevine under control.
